GTO versus exploitative play

One approach makes you impossible to beat. The other makes you impossible to stop. The best players switch between them.

GTO in one sentence

A game-theory optimal strategy is one in which your opponent cannot improve their results by changing theirs. It is a Nash equilibrium. When two GTO players meet, neither can gain by deviating; against anyone else, GTO either breaks even or wins.

What solvers actually do

Poker solvers simulate a specific spot over and over, adjusting both players' strategies until neither can improve. The output shows how often each hand should bet, check or raise. Two lessons come out of every solver session: strong strategies use mixed frequencies, and they bet small far more often than intuition suggests.

Two numbers from game theory

Minimum defence frequency (MDF) = pot ÷ (pot + bet). Facing a half-pot bet, continue with 67% of your range. Facing a pot-sized bet, 50%.

Bluff share of a betting range = bet ÷ (pot + 2 × bet). Pot-sized: one bluff for every two value bets.

Exploitative play

Exploitative play deliberately becomes unbalanced to punish a specific mistake. If an opponent folds to river bets 70% of the time, you should bluff far more than theory suggests. If they never fold, never bluff. You become exploitable in return, but only if they notice and adjust.

How to combine them

  1. Use GTO concepts as your default when you know nothing about an opponent, or when they are skilled.
  2. Collect information: how often they fold, call and raise in common spots.
  3. Deviate when you find a clear, repeated mistake.
  4. Return to balance as soon as they start adjusting to you.

At most live and low-stakes online tables, the profit lies in exploitation, because the players there make large, predictable mistakes. At high stakes, a solid theoretical foundation is the price of entry.

Frequently asked questions

What is GTO in poker?

Game-theory optimal play is a strategy that cannot be exploited: no opponent can gain by adjusting against it. In practice it is approximated by solver software.

Is GTO the most profitable strategy?

Not against weak players. GTO guarantees you cannot lose to an opponent's adjustment, but exploitative play wins more against opponents with clear mistakes.

What is minimum defence frequency?

The share of your range you must continue with so a bluff does not automatically profit. It equals pot ÷ (pot + bet). Facing a pot-sized bet, defend 50%.
